Train with a National Champion

Head Coach – Sensei Andrew Carr-Locke

New classes are now open. We train every Sunday in preparation for the upcoming 2016 tournament circuit.

Tournament class Sunday at 2pm

These Competition oriented sport karate classes are open to everyone. Basic safety gear is required for training, and all necessary equipment is available at the club. We train in a sport environment, meaning there is a warm-up, technical component, physical component, and a cool-down. All classes are taught by trained coaches under the Canadian National Coaches Certification program. To register for the program, please email us using the contact form on this website.

logos karateThe World Karate Federation (WKF) is the largest international governing body of sport karate with over 130 member countries. It was formed in 1990 and is the only karate organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee and has more than ten million members. Karate Canada and Karate Ontario are members of the WKF, and our athletes compete in the WKF Junior and Senior Karate World Championships, which are each held every other year.

Competition is in either the Kumite (fighting) category or the Kata (pattern) category. Athletes compete against each other attempting to score points. The player with the highest score moves forward in the competition until the gold medal is awarded.

kumite

Kumite is an engagement match between two competitors. Safety equipment is used at all times. The object is to demonstrate your technique against an opponent to score points. Penalties are given for too much contact and lack of control.

kata competitionKata is a floor routine performance of a set pattern of movements and breathing. It resembles a lone karate practitioner fighting imaginary opponents using a variety of techniques. These patterns and techniques are the old ways of recording and passing down the art form from one generation to the next. There is a set timing and cadence in which the practitioners must perform, much like a ballet of kicking and punching.

team kataKata is performed either alone, or in a synchronized team of 3

Sport Karate is a great way to stay in shape and have fun in friendly competition. It can give the athlete a healthy outlet for aggression and direct behaviour through the strict rules system and required karate etiquette and ritual.  Sport karate gives the individual a chance to better themselves, and compete for a spot on the provincial, national, and world teams. It includes levels of competition such as the PanAm Games, Summer Games, and Commonwealth Games.

gold medalsOur Novice Team will be competing in the 2016 Karate Ontario Provincial Championships circuit. This consists of 3 tournaments beginning in April. To join the team, all you need to do is train.

We will show you the way. Come and play for the gold.
